On Tuesday 9th April we were delighted to facilitate a ‘Retail Theft forum’ with An Garda Siochana in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel in association with Carlow Business Watch.  Superintendent Anthony Farrell (Carlow Garda District) presented to a full house, details from the National Statistic’s Office regarding Retail Crime rates in Carlow town and County, We also had a presentation by a representative from the crime prevention unit in Waterford in how retailers can reduce the prevelance of retail theft and shop lifting in stores.  There was then a lively open discussion with attendees from the Retail Sector regarding the specific challenges Carlow Business are facing.  Shop lifting, Begging, dealing with problem minors, abusive and anti social behaviour, and professional out of county shoplifting gangs were all discussed.  Carlow Chamber President Rowena Dooley, highlighted the importance of increased in person Garda presence on the beat to help reduce crime.  Superintendent Farrell highlighted the importance of reporting incidents and the effect this can have on subsequent convictions.
