Co. Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford Chambers of commerce invite you to join us for this webinar where representatives from Gas Networks Ireland will highlight the range of renewable gas projects that are being developed to diversify Ireland’s gas supplies and support customers to decarbonise their businesses.

Ireland’s gas network consists of over 14,600 km of gas pipelines and ensures that over 32,000 homes and businesses in Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Wexford receive a safe and secure supply of natural gas.

As energy demands continue to grow, Gas Networks Ireland will have a pivotal role to play in supporting the South-East region’s transition to a low carbon energy system in response to the challenges of decarbonisation. A core strategy of Gas Networks Ireland will be to transform Ireland’s modern and flexible gas network to support the development of indigenous renewable gases, including green hydrogen and biomethane, and enhance security of energy supply.

The renewable gas biomethane was injected into the gas network for the first time at Ireland’s first purpose-built injection facility in Cush, County Kildare. The dedicated renewable gas entry point commenced commercial flows in May 2020 and once flowing at maximum capacity, will have the capability to supply renewable gas to approximately 11,000 homes. Construction of Ireland’s second central grid injection facility is expected to commence later this year in Mitchelstown, County Cork and once completed will have the potential to inject enough biomethane to meet the needs of 64,000 homes. Research in partnership with UCD completed at Gas Networks Ireland’s Network Innovation Centre also displayed how customers using natural gas blended with up to 20% of green hydrogen will not need to make any change to their existing domestic gas appliances.
