CIELS

CIELS enjoys the unique status of being the only English Language School in Carlow that was founded and run by a fully qualified mainstream secondary school teacher, Dave Barron, with English being one of his teaching subjects. Dave spent most of his teaching career in the classroom of main stream education, and in later years moving on to a managerial position.

CIELS is a family-run school of English language and Irish culture. CIELS flagship course, its original ‘Junior Vacation Programme’, is recognized by The Department of Education via QQI / ACELS (Quality & qualifications Ireland / Accreditation & Co-ordination of English Language Services), for English Language Teaching.

CIELS was set up by Dave Barron (B.A., M.Ed., Dip. Ed. Management.) and Catherine Barron (Accommodation Officer / Garda Vetting Officer / Child Protection Officer) in 1996 as a Summer school for teaching English for the junior vacation programme. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on providing quality services in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Danny Barron (BBS, Cambridge DELTA) became involved in the school on a full-time basis in 2007, which now operates internship, EAP and cultural research programmes, year-round. Based on Danny’s Cambridge training, the CIELS syllabus and curriculum have evolved with the aim of teaching learners using a combination of the Direct and Communicative Approach: speaking and listening is learned through meaningful activities and tasks.
