Chambers Ireland Welcomes EU–Australia Free Trade Agreement and Security & Defence Partnership

Mar 25, 2026

Chambers Ireland has welcomed the announcement by the European Commission of a strengthened relationship between the EU and Australia, including the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement and the establishment of a new Security and Defence Partnership.

The agreement represents a significant step in deepening the EU’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and reinforces cooperation with like-minded partners at a time of increasing global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

The Free Trade Agreement is expected to deliver substantial benefits for European businesses, including improved market access and the removal of tariffs on the majority of exports, while also supporting stronger cooperation in areas such as raw materials.

Speaking following the announcement, Chief Executive Ian Talbot said:

“The EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement marks an important milestone in strengthening the EU’s global trading relationships and diversifying market opportunities for Irish businesses.

For exporters, improved access to a stable and like-minded market such as Australia presents significant opportunities for growth, investment and long-term partnership.

At a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, the parallel development of a Security and Defence Partnership is also welcome. Strengthening cooperation in areas such as cyber security, maritime security and emerging technologies reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of economic resilience and security.

It is important that this agreement delivers tangible benefits for businesses, including reduced administrative burdens, greater regulatory cooperation and clear, predictable rules for trade and investment.

As an open, export-driven economy, Ireland benefits from a strong and outward-looking European Union. Strengthening partnerships with trusted global partners such as Australia enhances the resilience and competitiveness of European businesses.”
