SuperValu Closure Timely Reminder to Shop Local
7.12.2015: County Carlow Chamber is reminding people of the importance of shopping local this Christmas. Speaking following the announcement that SuperValu is to close its store in Kennedy Avenue, Carlow Town on January 22nd 2016 Chamber President Derek Shannon said, “This is a big loss for the 54 employees involved, their families and for Carlow Town. Whilst it’s never a good time to hear this news the fact that it this announcement has come three weeks before Christmas is particularly difficult for everyone involved. We’re aware that management has said that they will endeavour to support the 54 staff in finding alternative employment and we hope that alternative jobs will be found for them either within the existing company or outside.”
He added, “SuperValu is the anchor tenant in Carlow Shopping Centre and its loss is a significant blow to Carlow town centre. The company has cited ‘difficult trading conditions over a sustained period,’ and the announcement serves as a reminder to us all of the need to support retail and business in local towns, whether its Carlow Town, Tullow, Bagenalstown or elsewhere. Local shops and businesses need our support, they maintain jobs for us, our families and friends and contribute to a healthy and vibrant society. Again, the message from County Carlow Chamber this Christmas season is to remember the power of your spend and when shopping to buy locally where possible.”
